The mission of GON is to inculcate a deep sense of awareness and understanding about the oceans and their importance to life on Earth, through a program of direct involvement and interaction, education, information, and training. A major component of the GON program is the development of a fleet of ocean-going research vessels which will be deployed in all of the oceans of the world. Aboard these vessels, ocean scientists will conduct research assisted by GON participants – including college-level interns, grade school children, and the general public – working together in a hands-on environment. The GON program has been under development for several years by Jean-Michel Cousteau and the Ocean Futures Society. In October 2004, a new initiative was undertaken in order to realize and manage the GON concept as an independent, stand-alone organization, managed by the Argos Foundation.
