THE GLOBAL OCEAN NETWORK

The Global Ocean Network is a joint initiative of:

The mission of GON is to inculcate a deep sense of awareness and understanding about the oceans and their importance to life on Earth, through a program of direct involvement and interaction, education, information, and training. A major component of the GON program is the development of a fleet of ocean-going research vessels which will be deployed in all of the oceans of the world. Aboard these vessels, ocean scientists will conduct research assisted by GON participants – including college-level interns, grade school children, and the general public – working together in a hands-on environment.

The GON program has been under development for several years by Jean-Michel Cousteau and the Ocean Futures Society. In October 2004, a new initiative was undertaken in order to realize and manage the GON concept as an independent, stand-alone organization, managed by the Argos Foundation. The three major thrusts of this new initiative include:

  • Development, deployment, and operation of the fleet of GON research vessels, as well as the development of other facilities to support ocean research and outreach to the public, around the world
  • Further development of the interactive educational program, based upon the work which has been on-going at Ocean Futures Society
  • Development and operation of the communications capabilities, based upon the latest advances in satellite communications, digital video data handling, and multi-media distribution which will tie together the operational assets of GON, and distribute the results to the general public around the world
