THE CENTERS FOR SPACE OCEANOGRAPHY

The Centers for Space Oceanography operates as a division of the Argos Foundation, and is a joint initiative of:

The mission of CSO is to develop new capabilities and applications based upon space-based imaging and monitoring of the oceans. Tremendous advances are being made in understanding and monitoring the oceans from space, largely through “data fusion,” or combining analytical models from a variety of space-based platforms and sensors into a single, multi-variable model.

The CLS Group of Companies is a world leader in various aspects of space oceanography. CSO’s charter is to work closely with the academic community to further develop new techniques and applications useful in the field of “operational oceanography”. Among CSO’s current research initiatives are:

Expansion of techniques involving satellite tracking and monitoring of marine animals (e.g., sea turtles, Florida manatee, etc)
Comprehensive regional monitoring of commercial fishing vessels, in support of global sustainable fisheries management (e.g., Caribbean Center for Ocean Management & Research)
Development of predictive analytical models on a global and regional basis, with particular emphasis on the Caribbean, Chesapeake, and Puget Sound regions (current initiatives)
