CARIBBEAN CENTER |
The Caribbean Center for Ocean Management & Research is an initiative of the Centers for Space Oceanography. The purpose of the Center is to develop a program of operational oceanography, space-based data collection, vessel monitoring and tracking, and data fusion in support of gaining a better understanding of the ocean environment in the Caribbean region. This program is intended to support scientific research, environmental analysis and protection, scientific data collection, and to support sustainable fisheries management for countries in the region. A number of companies, Governmental agencies, and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) have joined together to form the Center, to serve as an operational data fusion center focused upon the Caribbean Sea – the “Cradle of the Atlantic” for many important species. The concept for the Center was born during a fisheries management conference held in Trinidad & Tobago in May 2004, sponsored by the U.N. Food & Agricultural Organization (FAO). (Please note that, at this time, the Center is not affiliated with or endorsed by FAO, nor does the Center receive any financial support from the U.N. or any agency thereof.) The Centers for Space Oceanography is an operating division of the Argos Foundation, Inc. A not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, AFI is devoted to the development of space-based applications and solutions in support of educational programs and applications, environmental protection and science, humanitarian applications, and peace & security applications. CSO was established within the organizational structure of AFI in 2004 by the Foundation, the Florida Space Research Institute, the Florida Aerospace Finance Corporation, and North American CLS, Inc. The Caribbean Center is currently under development, as is our Website. Please check back for more information later in 2005, or contact:
